A genuinely slow metabolism has measurable symptoms, feeling cold easily, fatigue, constipation, weight climbing on little food, and it has measurable causes, a sluggish thyroid, low muscle mass, insulin resistance, chronic restriction and bad sleep. You do not speed it up with tea, you speed it up by treating the cause and building muscle.
"My metabolism is slow" has become a sentence of resignation, as if it were a genetic lottery with no appeal. The good news from physiology is that a slow metabolism almost always has an identifiable cause, and an identifiable cause has a treatment.
The symptoms of a genuinely slow metabolism
- •Feeling cold easily, icy hands and feet while everyone else is comfortable.
- •Fatigue that does not match the day's effort.
- •Constipation, dry skin, hair falling out.
- •Weight climbing, or not dropping, on honestly little food.
- •Sleep that does not restore and a mind in slow motion.
This cluster deserves investigation, not resignation.
The causes, from the most famous to the most forgotten
- •A sluggish thyroid. The classic cause: hypothyroidism slows everything down, from the gut to the reasoning. TSH and free T4 are the guideline entry point, with T3 in selected cases.
- •Low muscle mass. The most common and least discussed cause. Muscle is the body's biggest energy consumer; someone who spent years without strength training, or did aggressive diets that ate muscle, carries a smaller engine. It does not show on a blood test: it shows in body composition.
- •Insulin resistance. Chronically high insulin favors storage and hinders burning. The body is not slow: it is locked.
- •Chronic restriction. Years of back-to-back dieting teach the body to run in economy mode. It is metabolic adaptation: the metabolism slowed down to fit the scarcity you imposed.
- •Sleep and cortisol. Sleeping badly lowers expenditure and dysregulates hunger. No metabolism runs well in a body that never switches off.
What to do, and what not to do
Do not: thermogenic teas, "metabolism boosters" on your own, and one more crash diet, which is exactly what made the metabolism thrifty in the first place. Do: measure the causes (TSH and free T4, fasting insulin with glucose, ferritin, body composition, sleep) and go after what shows up. And the only proven way to raise resting energy expenditure durably is not in drops or capsules: it is building muscle. Strength training with adequate protein is the accelerator that works.

The answer is not one more isolated lab test. It is reading the system.
Medicine is one. The body does not divide itself into specialties: the model does. When each symptom goes to a different office and each doctor sees one piece, you spend years circling between referrals, holding reports and missing answers. In that back-and-forth, you lose time and health.
Precise diagnosis and treatment come from the opposite path: understanding everything and going deep into one patient. Sleep, hormones, weight, energy and mind interpreted together, because that is how the body works.
