They only work if they are correcting a real deficiency. Low B12, iron and vitamin D drag down focus, and correcting them improves it remarkably. But supplementing without a deficit makes no one more concentrated, the evidence is consistent on this. The cheap path is to measure first, and look at sleep, glucose and thyroid alongside.
The "focus and concentration" shelf is one of the fastest growing around, and the question deserves an answer without marketing: it depends on a single thing, whether there is a deficiency to correct.
When a vitamin really works
The brain makes dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters of focus and mood, from raw material: iron and B12 as cofactors, folate in the same system, vitamin D modulating the whole. Someone with ferritin on the floor or low B12 feels crumbling focus, slipping memory and fatigue, and improves obviously when it is corrected, at a guided therapeutic level.
The point is that this is not "taking a vitamin to focus". It is treating a diagnosed deficiency. They are different things, and the difference fits in a blood test that costs less than two months of premium supplements.
When it is money thrown away
Supplementing B12 with normal B12, or taking a multivitamin "just in case", does not improve cognition in a person without a deficit: study after study shows this. Nootropic formulas mix a dozen compounds at window-dressing amounts to sell the hope of a turbo brain. If you have been taking one for months and notice no clear difference, that is your answer.
What actually steals your focus
In clinical practice, when focus crumbles, the culprits are almost never on the supplement shelf:
- •Insufficient or non-restorative sleep, the biggest thief of concentration there is.
- •Glucose on a rollercoaster: a refined lunch, a 2 pm blackout, coffee, another crash.
- •A sluggish thyroid, which slows down all of your thinking.
- •The hormonal transition in women over 40, with the fog of swinging estrogen.
- •Chronically high cortisol, which keeps attention in surveillance mode, unable to dive into a task.
- •And the phone, which trains the brain in interruption. No capsule competes with 80 notifications an hour.
The right order for the investment
Measure (ferritin, B12, vitamin D, TSH and free T4, glucose with insulin), correct what is low, treat the sleep, stabilize glucose with real food. It is less glamorous than an imported jar, and it is what works. Focus is not bought in a capsule: it is built in a system.

The answer is not one more isolated lab test. It is reading the system.
Medicine is one. The body does not divide itself into specialties: the model does. When each symptom goes to a different office and each doctor sees one piece, you spend years circling between referrals, holding reports and missing answers. In that back-and-forth, you lose time and health.
Precise diagnosis and treatment come from the opposite path: understanding everything and going deep into one patient. Sleep, hormones, weight, energy and mind interpreted together, because that is how the body works.
